West Yorkshire Health Innovation and Digital Tech Investment Zone

The West Yorkshire Health Innovation and Digital Tech Investment Zone will bring £160 million in funding over 10 years to cement our region as a hub for health innovation.

What is the Investment Zone?

The West Yorkshire Health Innovation and Digital Tech Investment Zone is a set of funding schemes that will focus on developing innovation infrastructure and support programmes in the region.

It aims to build on the existing strengths that West Yorkshire has. We are already a centre for Health and Digital businesses, and the Investment Zone will accelerate growth in these sectors.

The Investment Zone represents £160 million in funding over 10 years for innovation infrastructure and development programmes. It will keep our research facilities at the cutting edge, create new jobs, increase our productivity as a region, and attract up to a quarter of a billion pounds of private sector investment.

We are creating the future of Health Innovation and Digital Tech here in West Yorkshire. This investment will catapult our strengths to the next level as we work to build a stronger, brighter West Yorkshire that works for all

Tracy Brabin Mayor of West Yorkshire
  1. What sites are involved?

The Investment Zone is anchored around three innovation sites:

    • The University of Bradford's Digital Health Enterprise Zone will support SMEs with product and service innovation.
    • Huddersfield’s Station to Stadium Corridor, anchored by the University of Huddersfield’s National Health Innovation Campus, will provide incubation space supporting business growth and innovation.
    • Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust's Leeds Innovation Village will offer space and support for SMEs to collaborate directly with clinicians.

  2. What projects will there be?

We have a number of initiatives that will give our people the critical skills they need to make the breakthroughs of tomorrow. This includes demand-led skills courses and industrial PhDs.

We are also championing West Yorkshire as a great place to invest in or locate a business. We will be launching a co-investment fund to boost local SMEs, and an inward investment service that will work with businesses looking to set up or grow their presence here.

  3. Why do we need an investment zone?

West Yorkshire is already a hub for Health innovation. We have world-class universities, more than 600 Life Sciences companies, and the highest density of NHS bodies in the country.

But our overall productivity and innovation lags behind the UK as a whole. The Investment Zone will cement our strengths and accelerate our growth so that we become a global centre for Health innovation.
